RE: Legal question: Is a search warrant required for RV entry?

After reading through the six pages above, and previous similar threads, it seems to me that the answer to the original question is: "Yes, you can decline permission for the search until a warrant shows up", and "But regardless, you can't stop the LEO from searching if he wants to anyway". Your difference of opinion would have to be settled later in court.

RE: What is the worst Road you drove on?

Pretty much any road in Central America. Especially in a Hyundai 15-passenger minibus with 830,000 km showing. Gearshift cable snapped going up a hill in Nicaragua. The enterprising locals had it repaired in less than an hour. And shock absorbers seem to be illegal in Central or South America.

RE: Renting your motorhome

There is a parallel situation in airplanes. Buy a nice airplane, pay for it via leaseback to a renting business, and cover your costs. But you get a huge amount of wear and tear on your nice airplane. It can work if you buy a rattier plane, and renters can't do it much more damage. Seems to me motorhomes would be similar. If you want to pay for it by renting it out, you better buy a junker.

RE: Columbia River Gorge

Boy, how folks differ in their interpretation! I've driven the Gorge perhaps hundreds of times. If the weather is good, I think the drive down the WA side is far superior scenery-wise. I-84 has a lot of traffic and trucks, and few scenic views. WA-14 west of US-97 is plenty wide, though 2 lane, but much more scenic. If you want to avoid the twistier bits as you approach Vancouver WA, cross back over at Hood River.

RE: Medical Bills

As a doc (thankfully, retired now!), let me explain part of this most folks don't understand. The doctor's office is REQUIRED to collect the noncovered amount as a condition of their insurance agreement. These agreements are dictated to them by the insurance companies, and usually with no negotiation at all. If the doc makes no effort to collect the copays, etc., the insurance company will simply reduce the amount they cover in the future. Now, how much effort they go to to collect the copay is open to negotiation. It often costs more to send the bill than is collected. So the vast majority of docs are open to the patient going in and negotiating, either the amount to be paid or the terms of payment. But when the patient makes no effort at all, and zero payment, that account will usually go to collection pretty quickly. So my advice is to let at least one billing cycle go by, then speak to the office managers at all the places (not just the billing clerk) and propose a plan of payment. It's likely that they will accept a lower amount paid now, rather than the full amount paid a lot later. Hospitals are a tougher nut to crack, but the same approach is often successful.

RE: Pressure Washer for Washing Motorhome

A lot of you all seem opposed to using a pressure washer on vehicles. But what's the difference between that and your garden-variety coin-op car wash? Just keep your distance, it seems to me.

RE: Let your brakes cool down..but for how long? Tragic

Here's another question for you DP brake experts: Let's say you've messed up by coming down a hill doing all the things we've agreed NOT to do. And now you have no air brakes and are careening down with full pants. What will happen if you pop the yellow knob emergency brake? Is that brake system separate?

RE: What does everyone do during normal days?

Join an overseas mission group. I do medical missions, but we use a whole lot of nonmedical people in the groups. And there are plenty of groups that do nonmedical stuff -- houses, water systems, ovens, etc. The groups arrange everything, you play your role, and people there appreciate you. You can't lose!

RE: Tow Bar Question

For my Roadmaster setup, on a CR-V, those square tubes on the vehicle are on 24" center. The brackets slip into them, but are configured differently on different rigs. Then the cross bar slips into the brackets, with those attachments at 30". Check the roadmaster web site and I think you'll see your parts.

RE: 06' Monaco Knight-Need Advice!!

I agree with DonDon. Before you give you money to a specialist insurance firm, see what your own insurance company would do. State Farm was very good for me, $670 on an 03 Winnebago Journey. They have all my other insurance, including umbrella, so that there's no way for a claim to slip between companies each declining liability. I took that opportunity to get a full quote from Progressive to do the whole package -- not even remotely competitive. That said, if you want "replacement value" you may well pay more. Read the fine print.

RE: suggestions on how to narrow screws holes

Pack the hole with steel wool, reinsert screw. If the hole is big enough, that Harbor Freight gadget works okay, too.

RE: Arctic Circle

Drove the road a couple of years ago in a rented SUV. Got to Coldfoot, didn't like the looks of the motels there, so called up to Wiseman for a B&B. Stayed there overnight -- highlight of our trip! Next morning the road was a mudslide up at Atigun Pass so we headed back. I thought it was a great drive! I think you need good tires -- the shale bits are really sharp.

RE: Towed car brake system installation

Freightliner DP chassis built after November 2002 are prewired for the USGear setup. In the whole big picture of getting a tow setup done, especially if you pay a dealer somewhere to do it like I did, the prewiring doesn't save you all that much. But hey, every little bit helps. System seems to work well, though I'm still new at it. I didn't like the idea of having to pull the box-on-the-floor in and out every night when we unhook the toad.
